Kids Karting Klub keeps getting bigger
Feb 20th
Kids Karting Klub met again this week, with even more members now having joined the club. It is so great to see so many children out there that are so interested in motor sport.
They are all determined to try very hard to get better each week and this will be reflected through their points over the series. We went through the point system this week and explained to them how they can lose points if they aren’t following the training or the safety flags/lights out on the track, but will gain them if they are doing the right thing and perform well or at least try to. I pointed out how paying attention in theory is also very important as this is where we impart our knowledge for them to use out on the track.
This weeks focus was Handling the Kart. We started with Denise whipping out the white board and teaching them all about racing lines and how learning about this can improve their time on the track. She led them in a discussion about all the different things that can effect handling of the kart, and had some great feedback from parents about the content of the training.
Out on the track the trainers had set up an obstacle course with witches hats, a crash site and lights. The children were to use the safety techniques learnt last week and the handling techniques discussed in the theory lesson from this week.
As they headed out on the track it seems a lot of the Senior’s had forgotten that they were training and were even ignoring witches hats, lights and flags. We can’t emphasise how important it is to follow these instructions on a race track – it can mean the difference between life and death in the world of motorsport, and this needs to be enforced when young. There was however some great handling out on the track and most of the race times were improved on from last week. We certainly have some competitive children to watch amongst this group.
Again the Junior’s were ripping it up out on the track showing great handling and safety skills. It’s always a treat to see them come out of the karts with their faces beaming and their whole bodies buzzing from the excitement. The parents are delighted to see their little ones so happy and learning so much.
Can’t wait for next week and to see who will get this week’s prizes. Last week’s went to
SENIORS
Christine Hortis – top points
Daniel Paterson – Race Winner
JUNIORS
Aleksander Chiciak – Race Winner and Top Points
Zaidyn Melrose – Race Runner up
Thanks,
Julie – Kidz Karting Klub Manager
Kidz Karting Klub kicks off with a bang!
Feb 13th
The Kidz Karting Klub got off to an awesome start this year with 18 children turning up on the first night. Denise started the night teaching the kids all about the safety equipment used and the parts of the kart. We were heavy on emphasising the SAFETY aspect of motorsport and went straight into the flag and light recognition. After briefly explaining the point system, the children were pleased to hear they could gain and lose points for training as well as racing. Julie and Denise then divided up the Juniors from the Seniors.
The Seniors then got out on the track for the first training session and there were certainly a lot of CRAZY drivers out there. The session was all about following flags and lights. With speeding and crashing, I think they had mistaken it for dodgem cars! The passion and competitiveness of some in this group could see them go far.
Whilst out on the track Julie was quizzing the Junior Karters about the flags and parts of the kart, all children new their stuff, and this was certainly shown once they got out on the track. As the Juniors got out there, we were all surprised to see how talented this little bunch of kids are, stopping at reds, giving way on the track and barely a “bump” in sight.
When the Seniors got back out on the track it seems that most of the guys had forgotten they were training and just went for it. We have some skilled drivers but in tonights training we are trying to emphasise how safety on the track is very important. A few mentions must go to our only girl out on the track who held her own and is near the leads on the points table.
All the kids appeared to have such a great time, with smiles laughter and excitement and were all looking forward to their race. In the Juniors we had Aleksander Chiciak come first and Zaidyn Melrose in second. In the Seniors race the winner was Daniel Paterson and Jeremy Reichert came in a close second.
Overall a AWESOME start to the series.
